A relational geography of the access to farmland in France (7 fig.; 2 tabl.)

In France, access to land is often presented as a matter of simple national legal norms. The article aims to show the spatial diversity of effective practices that compound regulations, local social conventions and contractual relations. The combination of these dimensions into local ‘‘farmland management styles’’ can be explained by evolving power dynamics between landowners, farmers, land market control agencies and local authorities. This multiscalar approach is based on a doctoral qualitative survey carried out in three study areas (Amiens, Lyon and the south-east of Aveyron).

Yoann DOIGNON. Geography of social change. The spatial diffusion of nonmarital births in France during the past half century (7 fig.)

Using a large database from civil registers, we studied the spatial dynamics of nonmarital births in France over a long period of time (between 1968 and 2017, almost half a century) and on a very small geographic scale (pseudo-cantons). The results reveal a spatial diffusion of nonmarital births. They show how the important role of traditional socio-cultural structures has gradually receded to allow for the emergence of a new spatial structure. Finally, we observe a shift of the urban hierarchy at the end of the 1980s, with secondary cities having a higher nonmarital birth rate than primary cities.

A diversity of forms of residential development on French coasts and their classification (4 fig.; 3 tabl.)

While the literature on coastal areas has mainly focused on the issue of their artificialisation, this paper integrates findings from studies on residential economy. The classification of coastal areas and their hinterlands establishes various forms of residential development and the economic inequalities they engender. By crossing socio-economic data with data on local tax resources, we were able to show that residential development occurs in a variety of territorial configurations; with this range of situations, territories unequally depend on this residential development model.

The exposure of cyclists to air pollution and noise in Lyon, France (4 fig.; 11 photos; 2 tabl.)

This paper aims to model the exposure of cyclists to noise and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Lyon (France). Primary data (1,095 km) was collected by bicycle in February 2019 and led to the elaboration of three Bayesian models (generalised additive mixed models with an autoregressive term) with the following dependent variables: noise (dB(A)), NO2 concentration (μg/m3) and NO2 inhalation (μg). Findings show that cyclists’ exposure to and inhalation of NO2 vary significantly according to the types of roads they use. These two urban nuisances should therefore be considered when planning bike lanes.

Pierre Monbeig and Brazil (1935-1946): Geography under tension (1 encadré; 3 fig.; 1 photo)

In 1935, the geographer Pierre Monbeig arrived in Brazil for study purposes. He was indeed undertaking a doctoral thesis on the Balearic Islands, but his discovery of Brazil and the specific issues of this new country were to challenge his conception of geography. This paper aims at analysing and interpreting the transformation of Monbeig’s reasoning and professional practices. In this vast and rapidly evolving country in which a large part of the territory remained undeveloped, Monbeig’s French education was to be stimulated by dynamic, open and land planning-oriented territorial conceptions.
