The distribution of population in Southeast Asia (5 fig.)

For more than fifty years, in nearly all countries of Southeast Asia, the distribution of population has been undergoing major changes, particularly noticeable in the peripheral and marginal regions, at the outset only lightly settled. Mapping this distribution for the years 1950 and 1995 presents a certain number of challenges but the results remain useful.

Globalisation of traffic networks in West Africa (4 fig.)

Understanding traffic patterns and trends in a specific space—in this case, West Africa—can be a useful approach to the extremely general theme of globalisation. The imposition of the global scale on the dominated space of European colonies has already been modelled in previous work (Taaffe, Morril, Gould, Rimmer). This paper proposes a model to follow on from that work.

Geography of civil union (6 fig., 2 tabl.)

In 2000, Vermont established the “civil unions”, a kind of marriage for same-sex couples. These “civil unions” relied on the local gay and lesbian community, contributed to the development of a “homosexual tourism” and to the acceptance, by some churches, of same-sex blessing ceremonies: homosexuality and countryside are not inevitably opposed to each other.

Spatial dynamics of an “empty” space in Brittany: the Lanvaux moors since the late 19 th century (5 fig.)

The last front of the farming conquest in the 19th century and, correlatively, the first sector to be abandoned as early as the 1940s, the Lanvaux moorland plateau is an interesting laboratory for studying spatio-temporal dynamics, since three radically different spatial systems have succeeded each other over two centuries. A vast enterprise of collection and calibration of highly diverse sources has made it possible to monitor the territory’s development and understand its mechanisms, interpreted by spatial analysis techniques.

Systemogenesis of a cross-border production space: the clock and watchmaking industry in Jura (4 fig.)

The spatial organisation of a territory owes much to history. In the case of a cross-border territory, the situation is complex, since the differentials generated by the State boundary continue to impact its future. There is a structure, but, more importantly, dynamics underscored by previous choices and bypasses. We have established a conceptual model to trace the history of the territory and discribe the implementation of the current spatial system, represented by graphic models with the aid of choremes.

Sébastien Bridier, The high-speed train and the mistral in tree-growing areas: mapping the wind’s disturbance by an embankment (7 fig.)

In order to analyze the influence of a railway embankment on the surface flow of the mistral, numerous series of wind measurements were carried out on eight fruit-tree parcels in the Durance valley ; carried out before, then after, the construction of the embankment they permit to define two levels of protection according to the permeability and the height of the shelterbelt, and areas where the embankment is at the origin of additional turbulence. The spatial extrapolation of the results on GIS shows that after construction of the line, small portions of parcels near the embankment are affected by additional turbulence that can damaged the fruits.

Joan Alpini. From the birth of territories to panhandles and other non usual forms (4 fig.)

Among curious territorial shapes, «panhandles» have long been described and named. They usually reveal either a need to access a particular resource (Caprivi), or to ensure protection (Wakhân), or a painstaking colonial or ethnic carve-up.
