Didier Benjamin, Henry R. Godard. Mayotte, a piece of France in the islamic world

Didier Benjamin, Henry R. Godard. Centralisation and polarisation: the urban area of Mamoudzou and the Mahorian villages (3 fig.)

In the past two decades, the economic and social structures of Mayotte have been radically transformed. The urban area of Mamoudzou, the entry point of goods, concentrates the population, economic activities and investment, and dominates the other islands in the archipelago, which have become “suburbs” of the north-eastern urban pole. Flows converge on this centre, which has a limited power of diffusion and redistribution towards the two “finisterres” on either side.

Henry R. Godard, Armelle Kaufmant. The rising tide of immigration (3 fig.)

Since the mid-1980s, inflows of official and illegal immigrants, more than 90% of whom come from the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros, have intensified. For the Comorans, mostly fleeing extreme poverty on Anjouan, the French archipelago is the last hope. For the French from mainland France, whose numbers have also risen significantly since the 1980s, this exotic territory offers managerial jobs.

Jean-Christophe Gay. The distribution of tourism in the Comoran archipelago (4 fig.)

The distribution of tourism in the Comoran archipelago has been strongly influenced by political considerations. Its balkanisation explains why tourists go to two islands, despite reduced flows.

Marion Hardegen, Françoise Gourmelon, Frédéric Bioret, Sylvie Magnanon. Mapping the terrestrial habitats in the Natura 2000 network in Brittany. Application for regional development (5 fig.)

The European Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats of Wild Flora and Fauna (1992) implies the production of surveys and standard maps of the natural and semi-natural habitats in the special areas of conservation earmarked for the future Natura 2000 network. Because of a lack of general references, the regional environment agency for Brittany commissioned specifications for all the actors involved. This approach seeks to harmonise the methods used across the whole Natura 2000 regional network.

Philippe Ménard, Philippe Clergeau. The concept of biological connection zone. Applications for regional planning (3 fig.)

The concept of biological connection zone has been defined as a functional space of biological exchange that fosters the conservation of local biodiversity. We have tested its validity and application in the case of a complex landscape, crossed by a motorway project.

Christian Jamot. Clermont-Ferrand (1 fig.)

The city of Clermont-Ferrand is not well known and has a highly negative image. It is nevertheless a strong regional capital with multiple activities, and it is trying to carve out a place for itself in France's Centre-East. Located on a plain, the city's governance problems are mainly human (intermunicipal coordination, transport, structuring infrastructure, etc.). Basically, its management lacks ambition and major projects and would benefit from a dynamic communications policy.

Claude Mangin. Places of stadiums, geographical models and media (6 fig.)

The study of the organisation of a football stadium not only reveals its own spatial logics but also, on the smallest scale, those of the societies of which the stadium is a reflection. It is easy to model and can be used to teach some fundamental principles of geography.
